MLK Jr

Surely, and rightfully so, there will be a lot of Martin Luther Kind Jr. quotes shared today. For the second or third year in a row, what calls to us more than anything is his letter from Birmingham jail. Specifically, where he calls out the silence and complacency of white moderates;

An excerpt: I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: “I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action”; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a “more convenient season.”

Ultimately, King wrote that "shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection."

Far too many parallels can be drawn to events of present day. We must ignore the partisan divide; This has nothing to do with being a Republican or a Democrat, this has everything to do with righteousness and who you are deep down in your soul. If you don’t speak out about racism, ask yourself: Am I complicit?

“The ultimate tragedy,” King once said, “is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.”
